Moving to Belize From the USA: What Americans Should Know

Moving to Belize from the USA is simpler than moving to most countries: Americans need no visa to enter, English is the official language, and the US dollar is accepted almost everywhere. The parts that take planning are residency, US tax filing, health coverage and choosing where to live. Here is what to sort out before you go.

Do Americans need a visa to move to Belize?

No visa is needed to arrive. US citizens enter on a visitor permit stamped at the border or airport, and many people spend their first months in Belize this way while they look around. The permit can be extended in 30-day blocks at an immigration office. According to the Belize Immigration Department's visitor permit page, the extension fee is BZ$200 (US$100) per month for all nationalities. Visitors may not work, paid or unpaid, while on a visitor permit.

For a longer stay, Americans usually choose one of three routes:

  • Keep extending the visitor permit. Common in the first year, and the usual path toward permanent residency.
  • Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program. Run by the Belize Tourism Board for people 40 and older with at least US$2,000 a month (or US$24,000 a year) in income from outside Belize. See the BTB's QRP page and our QRP guide.
  • Permanent residency. Generally available after living in Belize for a year. The immigration department's published fee for US citizens is BZ$4,000, since the US falls under "other countries" on its fee schedule.

Our residency options guide compares these side by side. Immigration rules and fees change, so confirm the current requirements with the Immigration Department or a licensed Belizean attorney before you commit to a plan.

How do you get from the US to Belize?

Flights are one of the biggest practical advantages. Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City has nonstop service from a long list of US cities. As of early 2026, the airport's own list of direct routes included:

RegionNonstop departure cities
SoutheastMiami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Charlotte
TexasHouston, Dallas/Fort Worth
Northeast and Mid-AtlanticNew York, Newark, Baltimore
Midwest and MountainChicago, Minneapolis, Denver
West CoastLos Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle

Schedules are seasonal, so check the airlines before you book. If you settle in the north, you also have Chetumal, Mexico, about 35 minutes from Coastal Vista, for shopping and services. Our guide on how to get to Corozal covers the drive north, domestic flights and water taxis.

What happens to your US taxes when you move?

This is the part Americans most often underestimate. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income no matter where they live, so moving to Belize does not end your US filing obligation. A few points to discuss with a US tax professional who works with expats:

  • Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE). If you earn wages or self-employment income while living abroad and meet the residence or physical presence test, you may exclude up to US$132,900 for tax year 2026 (US$130,000 for 2025), according to expat tax specialists summarizing the IRS adjustments. The exclusion applies to earned income only, not pensions, Social Security or investment income.
  • FBAR. If your foreign accounts together exceed US$10,000 at any point in the year, you generally must file FinCEN Form 114. Opening a Belize bank account (see our guide to banking in Belize) usually puts you in this group.
  • No tax treaty and no totalization agreement. The US and Belize do not have an income tax treaty, and there is no Social Security totalization agreement between them.

On the Belize side, retirees under the QRP program are exempt from Belize tax on income from outside Belize. Everyone else should get local advice on how their particular income is treated. Our article on taxes in Belize for expats goes deeper. None of this is tax advice: confirm your situation with a qualified US preparer and a Belizean accountant.

Can you collect Social Security and use Medicare in Belize?

US Social Security retirement benefits can generally be paid to Americans living abroad. The Social Security Administration has a Payments Abroad screening tool that tells you whether payments continue in a given country and whether any restrictions apply. Run it for Belize before you move, and set up direct deposit to an account you can reach from Belize.

Medicare is a different story. Medicare.gov states that Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the US, with narrow exceptions. Most Americans in Belize use a mix of the following:

  • Paying out of pocket at private clinics and doctors in Belize, where visit costs tend to be modest
  • An international health insurance plan that covers Belize and, ideally, Mexico
  • Specialists and hospitals in Chetumal or Mérida for larger procedures
  • Keeping Medicare Part B for trips home, which is a personal cost-benefit decision

Our healthcare in Corozal guide lists what is available locally.

What will feel familiar, and what won't?

Belize is often called the easiest Central American country for Americans to settle in. Several things will feel close to home:

  • English is the official language, and laws, contracts and government forms are in English.
  • The Belize dollar is pegged at BZ$2 to US$1, and US cash is widely accepted. Our explainer on reading prices in BZ$ and US$ helps avoid confusion.
  • Electrical outlets and appliances are similar to the US, so most small electronics come along without adapters.
  • The legal system is based on English common law, which makes land titles and contracts easier to follow with the help of a local attorney.

Other things take adjustment. Imported goods cost more because of duties and shipping. Government processes can be slow and often need an in-person visit. Power and internet are reliable in most towns but less polished than in a US suburb. And the pace is slower in a way that most people eventually enjoy, but rarely on day one.

Where do Americans settle in Belize?

Ambergris Caye and Placencia attract many first-time visitors, and Cayo draws people who want hills and rivers. Corozal, in the far north, appeals to Americans who want a waterfront town, lower day-to-day costs and quick access to Mexico. Spanish and English are both common there, and there is an established expat community.

If you want to build rather than buy an existing house, a residential lot is often the most flexible entry point. At Coastal Vista, a subdivision on Consejo Road northeast of Corozal Town, more than half of the 164 lots in Phase 2 have sold. Lots run from about 6,400 to 17,500 sq ft with cash prices from roughly US$14,700 to US$36,500. We sell land only, so buyers hire their own architect and builder and build when it suits them.

Foreigners can hold land in Belize on the same footing as citizens. Our article on whether foreigners can buy land explains how it works, and the due diligence checklist covers what your attorney should verify.

A first-year checklist for Americans

  1. Visit for a few weeks in both the dry season and the rainy season before buying anything.
  2. Renew your US passport if it expires within the next two years.
  3. Enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program so the US Embassy in Belmopan can reach you.
  4. Choose a residency route and track your visitor permit extension dates carefully.
  5. Arrange international health insurance before your US coverage lapses.
  6. Talk to an expat tax preparer about FEIE, FBAR and state tax residency.
  7. Open a Belize bank account and keep a US account for Social Security and card payments.
  8. Hire a licensed Belizean attorney before signing any land purchase agreement.

Frequently asked questions

How long can an American stay in Belize without residency?

You can stay on a visitor permit and extend it month by month at an immigration office for BZ$200 per extension. Many people do this for a year before applying for permanent residency.

Do I still file US taxes if I live in Belize?

Yes. US citizens file a federal return every year regardless of where they live. Exclusions and credits may reduce what you owe, but the filing obligation remains.

Can Americans own land in Belize?

Yes. Foreigners can buy and hold titled land in their own names. Non-Belizeans pay a higher transfer tax rate than Belizeans, which our closing costs guide explains.

Does Medicare work in Belize?

Generally no. Plan on private insurance, out-of-pocket care, or a combination, and treat Medicare as coverage for trips back to the US.
